History

Prior to becoming iSMART, our student organization began as the Network Security Exploitation Team or NEST for short. You may still see remnants of the old name in things like our list-serv name or email address. Established in 2013, NEST sought to provide training, guidance, and professional growth in the Information Assurance Field. Previously, the team competed in several cyber competitions in addition to inviting industry speakers and holding workshops, placing in the top 15 nationally during the 2013 Cyber Security Awareness Week- Capture the Flag Competition hosted by New York University.

Future Vision

Presently, we are working to build the club back out to encourage professional growth and development while at UNM. Currently we offer a wide variety of speakers presenting on different aspects of the Information Security and Business Analytics industries. Additionally, we are working with Anderson Faculty and major industry players such as Sandia and Los Alamos to present workshops and tutorials on how to use key tools of the trade.

In Fall 2023, thanks to the generous support of Eugene Rooney, a former Anderson faculty, we will be releasing a self-paced Canvas course which will offer support for those seeking a broader security curriculum. This course will provide access to valuable learning materials for free to all iSMART members.

Finally, we will be working with the CyberCorps to provide scholarships and job opportunities to students who need resources to support a career in Cyber Security working with the Federal Government.

For more information about any of these initiatives or to suggest a speaker or workshop, please contact us at nest@unm.edu.
